Vinyl Cut Project
project was all about making a multi-colored vinyl decal item. I began by thinking of simple text-based designs and making some sketches in my designer's notebook. I played around with different colors in Adobe Illustrator to see how they look together, as color is a big component of the final look of the decal. I opted not to use my name and instead created a red, white and blue vinyl cut decal of my favorite NFL team, the PATRIOTS. The vinyl cutting machine made quick work of the pattern, and with a little transfer tape and a steady hand, the tri-color decal was applied to my notebook.
FinalThis project once again showed the importance of moving through project steps, from ideation, to final design, to machining, and to final application or production. For example, it was important to select a font that was big enough and simple enough to be managed during the transfer process. It also had to be wide enough to make the three colors "pop" from the application area. I learned that red, white and blue are not just patriotic colors, but in the correct sequence will create a 3-dimensional looking decal.
This is the second project for which I have used the vinyl cutter, transfer tape, etc. This experience helped me think through and visualize the materials and steps to completing this project. Also in terms of experience, I am very used to the design work in Adobe Illustrator and can work directly from my design ideas in my head and put them into the software for visualization. The finished decal looks great on my notebook, so that's a bonus for this project. |
